Before a Game
- Please make sure you do your homework on how your class is played with their abilities, spells, features, etc. if you have any questions feel free to ask in your private channel.
- If you have a question on how an item works or need specific details on a spell or feature, there are bots on my Discord server that can display information – or ask me, and I can look it up for you.
- Weekly Games: When I post the next session date in your group’s calendar channel, please click the appropriate reaction below the post, so I know you will be attending or may be late or can’t make it.
- Please let me know if you will be late, can’t make it, or have to leave early – the more advance notice, the better, so the game can be scaled to the correct number of players.
- If you’re 15 minutes late after the session (and you haven’t briefed me in advance), then you won’t be able to join the session as changes have already been made.
- If you need handouts, notes, extra tokens, character sheet modifications, or any other resources from me, please let me know before the next session begins so we can ensure that’s done in advance rather than when we should be starting.
- Familiarize yourself with the layout of your character sheet so you know where essential stats are or how to roll an attack or spell.
During a Game
- Please be respectful and play nice with each other. Don’t be rude or mean or make the game upset the other players.
- Remember to be mindful of possible content triggers for others, so please watch what you say or joke around.
- It’s a turn-based game, please try to be quiet when it’s not your turn.
- Please don’t rush the other players at the table with their turns. Let me handle that and ensure you are ready to go when your next turn is.
- To keep the game moving, you’ll need to do all the movements and actions for all your tokens in a maximum time of about 2 minutes.
- Please work as a party, don’t go the solo route. That makes the whole party experience much less fun.
- Remember, sessions are 3-4 hours long. If we need to take a break in the middle, let me know, and we can take a 5-10 minute break.
- Roleplaying at my tables is always optional, never required.
- Be aware of other players. You can’t always be the center of attention; let the other PCs have their moments in the spotlight.
- Don’t make a roll unless the DM asks for it. If you want to perform an action, declare that action, and the DM will call for a roll if one is needed.
- Please always roll typically unless the DM tells you otherwise. If you have something working with your roles to give yourself an advantage or disadvantage, announce that and make the changes.
- When in combat, please be specific about what target you are attacking – don’t assume I know your plan of attack.
- Know your spells/abilities and keep things moving, or maximum times per player turn may be enforced. No one likes waiting 5 minutes in the middle of tense combat while someone tries to look something up!
- When you cast a spell, please post the spell text in the roll20 chat or discord chat for the party’s reference (unless it was already posted recently).
- Please keep track of your ammo or resource usage. If you have used a piece of ammo, subtract it from your sheet, and then afterward, you can make some rolls to try and retrieve your ammo.
- Consider the repercussions of your actions. If you do something dumb, the DM will hit you with consequences, it’s part of the game.
- The DM’s ruling is final; please respect that and move on to avoid holding up the game. If you still have a problem, bring it up afterward.
- If you have a seat at a weekly table or are playing in a one-shot, please use your private channel allocated to your character on Discord, don’t Private Message (I get too many already!).
- Periodically check your messages on Discord from your party or me, even if it’s for just 5 minutes every couple of days.
- Please remember I put all my extra time and energy into Dark Chaos. All my tables are free to play alongside the one-shots, so if you wish to support me or help by sending me a donation/contribution, see the Support page.
- Please be mindful and respectful of other players and community members, and be extra careful with specific topics and triggers in the server chat, as many people may be reading.
Sheets & Campaigns
- We use D&D Beyond to manage character sheets, your character must join one of my published campaign links so I can access it as a DM.
- Once you’ve made your sheet, post the Shareable Link (Share button at the top or from the settings menu) to your private channel.
- When leveling up or changing your character, please ensure your D&D Beyond sheet is kept up to date. Don’t make significant changes to your character without letting me know in your channel so I can check it for you and update my notes.
- Once I award experience or loot in the party channel, it’s up to you to add it to your character sheets and keep track of it.
- Weight is counted at my tables, so be careful how much loot you carry.
Communication
- My biggest pet peeve is communication. I can’t read your mind or speak for you, so don’t sit in the dark and not communicate.
- We use Discord Voice Chat for all game sessions and play using Roll20 for tabletop maps and tokens – make sure you have an active account on both (free accounts work fine).
- When in a session, please keep background noise to a minimum, so we have clear solid communication without distractions.
- If your mic cuts out or you have technical problems during a session, please type what’s going on in the Discord/Roll20 chat so we are still in constant communication.
- If your sound is interrupted or you can’t hear the voice chat, watch the Discord/Roll20 chat when it’s your turn. We shouldn’t have to yell for 5 minutes to get your attention!
- If you get disconnected from Roll20 or Discord, please let us know in chat so we can help you get back into the game with minimal loss.
- If you have any Roll20, D&D Beyond, Discord, or D&D questions please text me before a session rather than asking during the game.
Content Warnings
- Let me know if anything makes you uncomfortable during a session or within the community let any admin know, and we will take immediate steps to resolve it.
- We want this community to be a welcoming, friendly, safe space for all players.
- Please fill in the RPG Consent Checklist and post it to your private channel to let us know if there are any topics or issues we should steer clear of in your games.
